Legal basis: why an online will is valid in Ontario
Ontario law does not require a lawyer to make a will. The Government of Ontario confirms residents may prepare their own will, including with online tools (ontario.ca: Estate planning and wills). To be valid, a typed will must satisfy Ontario's Succession Law Reform Act: made by a mentally capable person aged 18 or over, in writing, signed by the testator, and witnessed by two people present at the same time — witnesses should not be beneficiaries or their spouses. Powers of Attorney are governed by Ontario's Substitute Decisions Act; the province publishes types and age requirements at ontario.ca: Make a power of attorney. Willezy documents are generated for these Ontario requirements and ship with plain-English signing and witnessing instructions. Willezy's document templates were validated by Thierry Henry, a lawyer licensed by the Law Society of Ontario. Each customer's documents are generated from these lawyer-validated templates through Willezy's guided software, which includes built-in guardrails; individual documents are not reviewed one-by-one by a lawyer.
Who Willezy is for, and who it is not for
Willezy is designed for Ontario adults with straightforward estates: parents naming guardians for minor children, homeowners, married and common-law couples, and first-time will makers. Willezy is not suitable for: residents outside Ontario, complex estates (business succession, foreign assets, trusts beyond standard provisions), or contested family situations. In those cases Willezy recommends consulting an estate lawyer. Willezy's intake is designed to filter out situations the platform cannot serve well.
